The Salina Eagle broke out in a big to advance to the Quarterfinals last night against Finney County, but just didn’t have enough in the tank to finish of the Hays Eagles as Hays wins 13-4.
Through three and a half innings Salina went toe to toe with Hays matching Hays every time they scored run. The middle and bottom part of the lineup gave Hays pitcher Kade Parker fits as they combined to go 6 for 11, with Drew Hilt picking up two runs batted in and Justin McCartney and Nick Shaffer each having one.
The score was 4-4 when it was Hays turn to bat in the fourth and that’s when the stronger team prevailed. Hays struck for nine runs off seven hits, two runs scoring off errors making it four Hays Eagle runs that scored due to Salina errors. Salina did swing the bats well against picking up eight hits, but Hays had as many hits as they did runs.
With the loss Salina Eagles are done in the Kansas Grand Slam Tournament finishing 1-3 in the tournament. Hays will advance to play the Topeka Golden Giants at 10:00 a.m. at James Matson Field. The winner of that game will play the winner of the Salina Hawks and Manhattan Manko for the Championship.
