LINDSBORG — John D. “Jack” Beighley, 86, died Saturday, July 7, 2012, at Bethany Home, Lindsborg. He was born Jan. 29, 1926, in Salina, the son of Vier and Verna (Paris) Beighley. Jack’s mother died at childbirth and he was raised by his uncle and aunt, Howard and Dorothy Richter, of Salina.

He was a Salina High School graduate in 1943 and served in the U.S. Army in Germany, where he met his future wife, Lieselotte Kunze. Jack returned to the farm and dairy near Smolan and married Lisa on Oct. 30, 1954, in First United Methodist Church, Salina. He was appointed postmaster of Smolan on July 16, 1962, and served until July 1, 1989. He was a member of the Salemsborg Lutheran Church.

Jack was preceded in death by a son, Howard Vier Beighley.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lisa Beighley, of Lindsborg; and a cousin, Robert (Kay) Richter, of Assaria.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 11, at Ryan Mortuary, Salina. Burial will be in Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina. Visitation will be from noon until 8 p.m. today, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Salemsborg Lutheran Church or Bethany Home, Lindsborg.

Gerald “Jerry” Michael Donovan, of Salina, Kansas, died on Saturday, July 7, 2012, at Salina Regional Health Center. He was born the oldest of three boys on April 7, 1947, in Norton, Kan., to William “Bill” and Leta (Chase) Donovan.

In 1965, Jerry graduated from Norton High School, where he was a star student and athlete. He attended college at Kansas State University, where he studied agriculture journalism. It was at K-State that he met his first wife, Chris (Van Sickel) Girard. They married and had three daughters. He was a career salesman and worked as an insurance agent for Cappers Insurance for the past 16 years.

Jerry was preceded in death by his father, Bill. He is survived by his mother, Leta, of Norton; his partner of 24 years, Teri Minton, of Salina; his daughters, Stacey (Cole) Robison, of Lawrence; and granddaughters, Maura and Genevieve, Julianne (Nathan) Wyman, of Liberty, Mo., and Diane (Tony) Yadrich; grandson, Brogan, of Shawnee; and his two younger brothers, Jack (Ruth) Donovan, of Rossville, and David (Lisa) Donovan, of Norton. He also is survived by many nieces, nephews and many treasured friends.

Jerry was truly a people person, who had a terrific sense of humor and always had a joke to tell. He enjoyed playing and watching all types of sports. He was famous for his spicy pretzels he made for everyone. In the past 25 years, he held many offices in the Sons of the American Legion, including Squadron, District and State Commander. Recently, he was the assistant adjutant for the State of Kansas and finance officer for Post 62 in Salina. He was proud to be a lifelong blood donor and was an organ donor. Everyone who met Jerry loved him for his unending kindness and giving nature. He will be dearly missed by all who had the good fortune to know him.

We will celebrate his life at a memorial service at the American Legion Hall, 142 S. Seventh St., Salina, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2012. The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, July 12, at St. Mary’s Church, 230 E. Cloud St., Salina, at 10 a.m., with Father Kerry Ninemire officiating. Graveside services will follow at 4 p.m. in Norton Cemetery, Norton, Kan. The Norton memorial service will follow the burial at 5:30 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, 1120 N. Norton Ave., Norton.
