Nickerson police chief resigns over hiring dispute involving race

April Addis, the police chief of Nickerson, resigned Tuesday after a hiring dispute allegedly involving race.

In an interview with the Hutchinson News, Addis said the town council members requested she tell a black man that he was not getting the job he had applied for with the Nickerson police dept, after approving other hires.

She was reprimanded on Nov. 1 by the council.

Nickerson Mayor Bill Golding said Addis’ reprimand was not due to her hiring the officer.
