Democrats Pan Kansas Governor’s Agenda

Sam_Brownback_official_portrait[1]Kansas Democrats are critical of Republican Gov. Sam Brownback’s proposals for further state income tax cuts and amending the state constitution as it relates to education and the courts.

Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensley of Topeka and House Minority Leader Paul Davis of Lawrence said Tuesday following Brownback’s State of the State address that such fiscal policies would create a deeper, self-inflicted budget crisis for the state. They said tax cuts that took effect Jan. 1 have already created a shortfall in state revenues that must be closed, most likely with cuts in state spending.

Democrats also said the Republican governor is wrong to suggest that the appropriate way to deal with a recent court ruling on school funding was to amend the constitution.
