Everyone Faces A Challenge, Now And Then

Life is filled with incredible challenges.

Each of us experiences a unique set of variables—highs and lows— in this process called life. Some of us are blessed to have had extended family around most of our lives—others are somewhat alone in the world. Some people I’ve met along the way seem to get more than their share of challenges laid before them—and others, not so many. I’ve met people who have all the worldly possessions they will ever need—and yet, they are mostly unhappy. And I’ve known folks who barely have a nickel to their name who are filled with love and grace for each person they meet, every day.

We all know stories of someone who has overcome great adversity to lead a fulfilling and valued life. Others we know won’t get off their rear ends to help themselves, let alone others. Where do you find yourself on this curve, today?

Over time, I’ve found that for me– faith carries me through most challenges and difficulties.  I try to do the right thing, but so often I fall way short of the goal—and I make mistakes all the time. People make mistakes— no one is immune. Having many years of experience of trying to fix stuff on my own and trying to overpower or overcome any problems in my way— I find that the process of “Tom Wilbur can fix it all by himself” doesn’t always work so well. I have discovered that a relationship with God allows me to “download” life’s serious issues by lifting them up with a prayer, and by asking for His help and support in moving ahead.

It’s centered in faith. Faith means trusting in something you can’t see or touch, but you know is there. Regardless of where we are in our journey, faith, prayer and meditation always seems to make a difference. In the quiet, and in the stillness, we can simply take time to listen for God’s guidance. He will respond.

In prayer, there is hope. In prayer, you can find peace. As you pray, you begin to form a relationship with a special presence in your life—a sense of spiritual fulfillment that will grow within you and eventually define you.

Prayer, and this ongoing relationship with God, evolves into more positive actions. Among these—a life dedicated to servant leadership. Leading by serving Him, in serving others. It’s a commitment, as we actively search for opportunities to be of service to others, instead of spending so much time dwelling on ourselves.

So on the next snowy day (hint, hint), when you find you have little to do, instead of planting yourself in front of the TV, why not plant a seed of faith in your heart, and nurture it into something meaningful? Pick up a Bible, and read it (say, the Chapter of John) and renew your relationship with God. Close your eyes, and share your thoughts with Him. Seek His guidance, and ask for His forgiveness. It will all work out.

If you haven’t been to church in a while, and are worried that it might be a challenging experience to get back in the saddle, come join me in worship at The NINE:50 service at Trinity United Methodist Church, on Neal Street (just off Ohio) each and every Sunday, at 9:50 a.m. We sing. We pray. We share ideas. We take communion. We gather to lift up others. No one will judge you. And it’s a very casual laid back service. If you don’t have a church home, come give it a try. If you do have a regular church home, Lent is an awesome time to be in the pews—a great time for renewal, for us all.

Special prayers for those of you whose hurts come from pain or sickness, or challenges with family, or a recent loss of a family member or friend. My prayers are with you today. Much love and abundant blessings,
