U.S. Rep. from Arizona, Gabrielle Giffords (D) was shot in the head at point-blank range outside a grocery store in Tucson while holding a public event. According to a medical staff she is expected to survive. Five others, however, are reportedly dead. One of those killed was federal judge John Rolls. “Police arrest man near Thornydale and Magee Roads who is suspected of being connected to the shooting of Giffords and others. A third man is being sought.”

UPDATE (2:56): MSNBC reports thats Tucson’s deputy city manager says doctors expect Giffords to pull through.

UPDATE (2:52): Report: state senator Linda Lopez tells Fox, “We just heard that [Giffords] is responding to commands. She made it through surgery.”

UPDATE (2:42): NBC is reporting that federal judge John M. Roll was killed in the attack.

UPDATE (2:33): Thomas V. Fuentes reported for CNN that “the FBI will have the lead jurisdiction because it’s an attack on a member of Congress.”
Capitol Hill Police have advised members and staff to “take reasonable and prudent precautions regarding their personal security.”
