ABILENE, Kan. – President Eisenhower’s farewell address with its warning of the “military-industrial complex” may have been delivered half a century ago, but it still resonates today. The speech will be the topic of dicussion among some of the nation’s top journalists on Jan. 18 at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. “The Farewell Address: 50 Years Later” program will be simulcast in the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum library building auditorium at 6:30 p.m. CST.
“We’re pleased to be able to show this national program live in Abilene. It’s so important to have these discussions for our home audience as well as for our national audience in the D.C. area and elsewhere,” states Karl Weissenbach, director of the Eisenhower Presidential LIbrary and Museum.
The program begins with opening remarks by Susan Eisenhower followed by a screening of the original Farewell Address, courtesy of CBS News. The panel discussion will be moderated by David Gergen, Senior Political Analyst for CNN. Panel members include: James Fallows, national correspondent for The Atlantic; Dana Priest, investigative reporter for The Washington Post; and Evan Thomas a veteran journalist who recently left Newsweek.
This program is held in partnership by the Newseum, Eisenhower Institute, and Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum.
