Kansas Congressman Tim Huelskamp offered the following statement upon learning that Speaker John Boehner will convene the House’s Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group in order to consider the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in federal courts:

“I appreciate Speaker Boehner taking this important step,” Congressman Huelskamp said.  “The President’s outrageous decision to not enforce a law that Congress passed and a fellow Democrat signed into law is a clear violation of his constitutional obligations.  I look forward to the bipartisan group’s review of the President’s unilateral actions. ”

Congressman Tim Huelskamp represents the First District of Kansas.  He was the author of the Kansas Marriage Amendment, which passed overwhelmingly and with record turnout in April 2005.

The Defense of Marriage Act was passed by the U.S. House and Senate with bipartisan majorities in 1996. It was signed into law by President Clinton shortly thereafter.

The Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group is comprised of the Speaker of the House, Majority Leader, Majority Whip, Minority Leader, and Minority Whip.  Upon instruction from this Advisory Group, the House General Counsel takes legal action on behalf of the House of Representatives.
