BETHANY COLLEGE VOLUNTEERS FOR EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION

LINDSBORG, KAN.— The ABC network reality TV show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition built a new home for a deserving family in Wichita, Kan., from Feb. 17 to 24. The show relies on volunteers to complete construction in only a week. The Student Outreach through Active Response (SOAR) program at Bethany and the Alumni coordinated with Bob Cook Homes, a supplier for the project owned by Bob and Bethany alumna Deb Cook, to sign up volunteers for one six-hour shift.

The number of Bethany students, faculty, and staff that volunteered was more than one shift needed. Bethany ultimately sent 76 volunteers to exclusively work two shifts on Feb. 20 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.

SOAR coordinator Cassandra Smith says, “The response has been overwhelmingly positive. It’s a great and exciting opportunity for students to get out in the community.” Student Sarah Bennett notes, “You see some of what goes into the Extreme Makeover houses on the show, but it’s much more special when you’re a part of it and helping someone locally.”
