Kansas Wesleyan opened the KCAC portion of its 2011 Baseball season with a 1-0 and 2-0 sweep of the Saint Mary Spires on Friday afternoon at Dean Evans Stadium.
The games were two quick affairs as the opener only took 77 minutes and the night cap took only 86 minutes to complete.
In the first game, runs were hard to come by as it took until the bottom of the seventh for any runs to be scored when the Coyotes got the game winner.
Wesleyan had a chance in the bottom of the first to put a couple on the board, but a pair of two-out singles by Brandon Trodick and Zach Willand could not produce any offense.
Saint Mary had its best chance in the top of the fifth when Rodney Spillman walked with one out followed by a Kevin Joyce single up the middle in which KWU shortstop Nick Hartzell was injured on the play to give the Spires two on. A sacrifice bunt by Josh Barnes got both runners into scoring position but Stephen Malisa struck out to end the inning.
The Coyotes had another chance in the bottom half when Wesleyan got two on with two outs, but Jeff Gonzales grounded into an inning ending fielder’s choice to end the threat.
A quick sixth and top of the seventh set up the walk off seventh. Pinch hitter Jordan Bain led off the inning with a double followed by a Jake Bowyer single. Saint Mary intentionally walked Omar Sadaoui to load the bases and then got Tito Garcia to hit into a fielder’s choice in which the Spires got the out at home. Then with the bases loaded, Gonzales faced an 0-2 count before seeing four straight balls for the game winning, walk-off walk to win 1-0.
Trent Montgomery got the shutout win, going the distance, allowing just four hits, while striking out five against one walk. Five different players each had a hit for the Coyotes. Evan Faulkner took the loss for Saint Mary, giving up one run on five hits while walking four and striking out two in six and two-thirds innings of work.
Game two was another pitching gem for the Coyotes as Matt Royal tossed another four hitter for the win as KWU blanked the Spires 2-0.
The Coyotes got on the board in the bottom of the second after Trodick led off the frame with a single and then scored on Bowyer’s one-out double to left.
Saint Mary had a great chance to plate a run in the fourth, but was unsuccessful. Cody McCary led off the inning with a double down the line in right, but got no further than third on Lucas Murphy’s ground out to first before two fly outs ended the inning.
Wesleyan (11-8, 2-0 KCAC) added another run in the sixth when Zach Willand hit a monstrous homer, his first of the year, to right center to put the Coyotes up 2-0.
After a leadoff single by Travis Quick for Saint Mary (4-15, 0-2 KCAC) in the top of the seventh, Spillman grounded into a 6-3 double play and Joyce grounded out to short to end the game.
Royal allowed just four hits while walking one and striking out three in the complete game shutout win. Jordan Bain had two of Wesleyan’s seven hits, while Willand and Bowyer each drove in runs for the Coyotes.
Jake Wolf took the loss for Saint Mary, allowing two runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out two in five-plus innings of work. Devin Hupp had two of Saint Mary’s four hits.
The Coyotes and Spires complete their season series on Saturday afternoon in Leavenworth.
