WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – The winter wheat crop in Kansas is showing
limited improvement with the arrival of warm weather and moisture
as the wheat comes out of dormancy.
Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service reported Monday that 37
percent of the crop was still in poor to very poor condition, with
about 36 percent in fair condition. The report says 25 percent was
rated good and 2 percent in excellent condition.
The agency says 83 percent of the wheat showed no wind damage
and 81 percent showed no freeze damage.
Crop development is a bit slower than usual with just 5 percent
of the wheat jointed, compared to an average of 7 percent at this
time of year.
