Coffee Talk Rant: Drive the Speed Limit or Quit Driving

By Randy Picking

The following comments will surely anger some who take the time to read them.

In May, I will turn 54 years old. I’m in the early stages of being a geezer and proud of it. To the embarrassment of my family, I occasionally wear black knee high socks  and white tennis shoes while wearing shorts. I have also been asked not to go without a shirt on  outside in the yard, because It scares kids and confuses babies.

However there is one thing that geezers that are a little more seasoned than I, do that makes me flip….driving tooooooo slow.

If you are not able to drive the posted speed limit on any street or highway, then please quit driving. The other day driving on ninth street in Salina between Cloud and Ash, an older gentleman would drive no faster than 20 miles per hour  in a 30 mile per hour zone and would brake and almost came to a complete stop in intersections WHEN THE LIGHT WAS GREEN! This is just one example of what I encounter while driving in Salina on an almost daily basis.

Drivers who drive too slow are in my opinion  just as dangerous as those who speed, read, and text, while driving. Anything that impedes the flow of traffic is a hazard.

I would like to suggest and will pass this suggestion on to local legislators that when drivers achieve the age of 60 or 65, they need to take a yearly driving test that would require them to be able to drive the posted speed limit. (Of course I understand that weather conditions can and should play a role in how fast someone drives).

I want to close by saying I respect those who are older than myself , but please If you are not able to operate a motor vehicle at a posted speed limit, then don’t drive
