WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – The federal government has increased its oversight of the Wolf Creek nuclear power reactor.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission says concerns failures in the safety system an unplanned shutdowns prompted it to increase its oversight of the plant near Burlington. However, the commission says Wolf Creek is being operated safely.

Wolf Creek was notified of its status March 4.

Plant spokeswoman Jenny Hageman says Wolf Creek is a safe facility, noting this is the first time it has been placed on heightened oversight.

The Wichita Eagle reports Monday that the NRC has five oversight levels for the nation’s 104 nuclear reactors.

Wolf Creek is one of three reactors on the third level of heightened oversight. Ninety-two reactors are at the lowest level and nine others are at the second level.
