Search Resumes For Missing Teen At Cheney Lake

HAVEN, Kansas (AP) — Authorities are searching a south-central Kansas lake for a 16-year-old boy who disappeared under the water. A jet ski was being used to search the water at first but severe waves caused the water search to be suspended.

“We’ll continue as soon as we can on the water,” explained Dennis Zehr with Kansas Wildlife & Parks. “For now we continue to comb the edges near where the teen was lost.”

Reno County Sheriff Randy Henderson says Danny Thomas Allen, of Haven, was wading in Cheney Lake on Monday afternoon with two other teens.

The sheriff says a wave knocked the boy into deeper water and he went under. Henderson describes Allen as a non-swimmer.

“Yes, the two other teens tried to help him get back out of the water,” says Zehr, “but the waves were too much.”

While the search on the lake was suspended Monday evening because of rough waters, the search continued on the shorline with plans to put boats in the water as soon as possible.
