Fireworks Suspected In Wheat Field Fire

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – A Kansas farmer has a message for people intent on setting off fireworks: Do it in your own yard.

Investigators said they found evidence of fireworks near a blaze that burned 10 acres of a wheat field Monday afternoon in Sedgwick County, northeast of Wichita. The farmer, Darryl Meyersick, says people had been shooting off fireworks in the middle of a nearby road.

Meyersick had already harvested his wheat, but he wanted the stubble to remain on the field to remain to prevent erosion and protect the soil moisture.

Meyersick told KSNW-TV that people shooting fireworks should have some respect for others. Fire crews say they were fortunate the humidity was fairly high, so that the fire spread slowly.
