LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — A 21-year-old Lawrence man will go to prison for nearly six years for injuring a police officer who suffered permanent damage to his vision.
The Lawrence Journal-World reports that police officers and detectives packed a Douglas County courtroom on Monday to see Louis Galloway Jr. sentenced to five years and nine months.
In a statement read by his lawyer, Galloway apologized to Officer Jonathon Evinger and his family. But he also accused police of profiling him because his own father is in prison.
A jury convicted Galloway of punching Evinger as he and another officer tried to arrest him in February for driving on a suspended license. Galloway disputed that he was driving.
Evinger said in court he has internal eye injuries that have affected his career and his life.
