Officials Defend 9-Hour Closure Of Interstate 70

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (AP) – Kansas officials say they were just being cautious when they closed a 25-mile stretch of heavily traveled Interstate 70 for more than nine hours because of a suspicious vehicle.

The Kansas Highway Patrol closed the interstate west of Topeka on Monday afternoon after troopers pulled over a pickup truck driven by a man believed to have made a threat in Junction City earlier in the day.

A 50-year-old Arkansas man is being held on $100,000 bond after being charged with aggravated criminal threat. He is accused of calling 911 Monday morning and saying hazardous materials had been placed in a room at the Ramada Inn in Junction City.

Nothing dangerous was found in either the hotel room or the pickup truck. The highway was re-opened around 10:30 p.m. Monday.
