A Great Bend man was killed during a police pursuit near Lyons early Saturday morning.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Great Bend Police were in pursuit of a vehicle driven by 22-year-old Ryan L. Byers. He was traveling eastbound on U-56, 9 miles west of Lyons, at a high rate of speed when he entered the westbound lane, colliding head-on with semi.

Byers was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the semi, Scott D. Zwick of Lyons, was transported to Wesley Medical Center with injuries.

His condition has not been released.
