AWOL Fort Riley Soldier Dies After Police Standoff In Abilene

A Fort Riley soldier who did not show up for the second day of his court martial for raping a child, died after a standoff with law enforcement officers.

Fort Riley officials say Sgt. Kirk Evenson died late Thursday after the standoff at a hotel in Abilene.

Evenson had been reported absent without leave Tuesday when he did not show up for a court martial for raping a child. He was convicted on Wednesday and sentenced to life without possibility of parole.

Fort Riley spokeswoman Lt. Col. Sophie Gainey says Evenson’s car was seen outside the Abilene hotel on Thursday. When officers went to apprehend him, a lengthy standoff began and Evenson was killed. Further details were not immediately available.

Evenson was assigned to the Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division.
