Kansas Jobless Rate Edges Higher

A new report says Kansas gained 2,100 nonfarm jobs last month but still saw a slight increase in the unemployment rate.

The state Labor Department reported Friday the seasonally adjusted jobless rate rose in August to 6.7 percent from 6.5 percent in July. Unemployment in August of last year stood at 7 percent.

Among major industries, the department says professional and business services gained 3,700 jobs from July to August, while hospitality and leisure added 1,900 jobs.

The biggest declines were in education and health services, which lost 1,400 jobs, mostly in health care and social assistance. The Labor Department also says retail trade accounted for all 1,000 losses in the trade, utilities and transportation sector.
