Fort Riley Seeking Soldiers Exposed To Rabies

Irwin Army Community Hospital in Fort Riley is looking for soldiers or civilians who might have been exposed to rabies while deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The hospital said in a news release that a soldier from Fort Drum who recently returned from Afghanistan died Aug. 31 from rabies. He had been bitten by a dog while deployed.

The hospital says it’s working with brigade commanders whose groups recently returned from Iraq and Afghanistan. The hospital is looking for people who were in the two countries after March 2010 who might have had contact with a stray animal.

It says anyone who meets that criteria should be checked by medical personnel, even if no symptoms are apparent.
