Film Actor Jernard Burks to Star in “Fences”

Film actor Jernad Burks will return to Salina to star in the lead lead role of Troy Maxson in August Wilson’s award-winning play “Fences”. Salina Community Theatre and Kansas Wesleyan University will partner to produce the show, one of the most celebrated of the 10 play “Pittsburgh Cycle” that tells of the African American experience decade by decade through the 20th century.

Mr. Burks will be reprising a role he first played when we was a student at Kansas Wesleyan. He also starred in SCT’s production of August Wilson’s “The Piano Lesson” in 2004. Mr. Burks has a successful film and television career with roles in “The Hangover”, “Four Brothers”, “Snake Eyes”, “ER”, “Glee”, and “Franklin and Bash”.

FENCES is the story of Troy Maxson, a Negro League baseball player who was too old to find a place in the major leagues with Jackie Robinson and Larry Doby. He struggles to hold onto his dignity and family in the 1050’s. This play has won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Tony awards for Best Play and Best revival of a play, as well as Drama Desk Awards for Best Play.
