Flags are being flown at half-staff in Atchison County to remember the victims of a grain elevator accident that killed six people and seriously injured two others.
Gov. Sam Brownback issued an executive order calling for the special remembrance Thursday and Friday. In a letter, he directed the Department of Administration to urge all residents, schools, businesses, organizations and government entities to lower their flags from sunup to sundown both days.
He also wrote that the state’s thoughts and prayers are with the injured and the families of the dead.
Saturday’s explosion killed 21-year-old Curtis Field, 20-year-old Chad Roberts, 21-year-old Ryan Fedrinko, 24-year-old John Burke, 43-year-old Darrek Klahr and 34-year-old Travis Keil.
The state fire marshal’s office is working to have a preliminary report next week.
