On January 3, at 6:10 PM, the Hays Police Department received a report of an injury accident in the 200 block of West 13th Street. Emergency personnel from the Hays Police Department, Hays Fire Department and Ellis County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to the scene and found that two pedestrians had been struck by a vehicle.
The two pedestrians were crossing 13th Street when they were struck by a 2005 Dodge Stratus that was east bound on 13th Street. Both pedestrians were outside the crosswalk when they were struck by the vehicle.
The two pedestrians were Gilbert, 81, and Gloria, 79, Leiker, both of the Hays area. The Leikers were transported to Hays Medical Center and later transferred to Wichita. Gloria Leiker later died from her injuries. The driver of the vehicle was a Sister Mary Louise Pfannenstiel, 74, of Hays, and she was not injured.
The accident is currently being investigated by the Hays Police Department.
