An injured snowy owl found this week near a Lawrence post office has died.
The bird was rescued Monday after visitors to the post office saw it fall and hit concrete, apparently after hitting a power line.
At that time, Operation Wildlife executive director Diane Johnson believed the snowy owl had broken a wing and could survive. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that Johnson says the bird apparently also suffered serious internal injuries in the fall.
Snowy owls generally aren’t found in Kansas but several of the birds have been seen in the region this year. Wildlife experts say that’s probably because their food supply in northern states has declined
