UPDATE: According to a Salina Fire Department release, Fire Investigator Jeff Daily conducted the origin and cause investigation and it was determined that the fire had originated in the fire place, resulting from the homeowner burning leaves and other yard waste.
The homeowner had placed a large amount of leaves inside the fire place and had gone outside to gather more when he returned inside the smoke detectors were going off.
It was further determined that the homeowner had not closed his doors to the fireplace nor did he have any protective screen to contain any of the sparks or embers.
