Salina Police Officer Hurt in Chain Reaction Crash Sunday

A Salina Police Officer was treated and released from the hospital for a sore back Sunday afternoon, after his patrol car was rear-ended in a 3 vehicle chain reaction wreck near the intersection of Crawford and Ohio.

Officer Gary Hanus was slowing down in the K-9 unit for a red light northbound on Ohio, when a car behind his patrol car was struck by a van, causing the chain reaction crash.

The driver of the car 58-year-old Wayne Nelson of Salina declined medical treatment, but did say his back and neck were sore.

The driver of the van, 18-year-old Amanda Merrick of Salina was not hurt.

The wreck happened around 2:15 pm Sunday. The van and patrol car were both towed from the scene, and damage estimates were not available.

Merrick was cited for inattentive driving.
