Letter to The Post: Unions

Submitted by Sam Pridey

Unions. The question, do they still have their place in the American lexicon?

When unions where first brought to be, I will admit, they were a great thing being that they protected workers from unscrupulous business owners who chose profits over the workers.

Nowadays, I ask the question above. Beginning with Boeing. Every three years the machinists and the engineers would go on strike and the salaries went up and up. Granted Boeing had to restructure. Given 97 buildings in Wichita, I don’t see why they couldn’t consolidate their operations into fewer buildings and use the others for storage, but that is fodder for another opinion. Looking at the situation, it appears to me that the unions are pricing Boeing out of the aviation business.

Look at the price of things today and what Hostess is going through. Their second time into bankruptcy protection and having to ask the unions for concessions. When is it going to hit General Mills and other companies? I feel it isn’t far off.

Now a days, it looks like the unions have turned into the unscrupulous business people that the unions were first brought into being to protect the workers from. Now it seems the American pocket book needs to be protected from them driving the wages higher and higher and subsequently driving prices higher and higher.
