A standing room only crowd attended the first part of the Salina City Commission meeting Monday afternoon hearing a request for the commission to approve a resolution that would ban discrimination against a person because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Most of those who spoke, supported a resolution to not discriminate against lesbian, gays, bisexual, or transgendered people.
While the Salina City Commission was asked to consider the resolution Monday, City Manager Jason Gage said that it would not be a good idea, but perhaps the city could conduct two to three public forums to gather input from the community.
Comissioners Aaron Householter and Barb Shirley both expressed that the resolution should be considered and placed on a future city commission agenda. Commissoner Norm Jennings did not want to place the issue on the agenda with an arbitary date, because it could be implied that commission would take action on the date it is on the agenda.
Commissioner Kaye Crawford wants to take time to look at the possible change of the ordinance because education of the issue is important.
At the end of the discussion The Commission 3-2 ask the city staff to look into the issue and place it on the city commission agenda within 90 days and have the Human Relations Commission conduct the public forums and provide a recommendation for the commission.
