Kansas City Man Steals Pickup From Home of Saline County Deputy Saturday

A 48-year-old Kansas City, Kansas man could face criminal charges in at least 4 central Kansas counties, after he hitched a ride to Salina Saturday afternoon after his car became disabled on I-70 east of Salina.

Scott Mitchell is then alleged to have stolen a pickup from the home of Saline County Deputy David Higgins in the 1900 block of N. Halstead Road about 2:45 pm Saturday afternoon, after breaking into Higgins Home, while Higgins was working in a shop. Mitchell is also alleged to have stolen cash and the truck and causing damage to the home. He left at a high rate of speed going through a flower garden before getting onto Halstead Road.

Mitchell traveled west on I-70 where he was involved in a hit and run with another vehicle going west in Ellsworth County . No one was injured in the hit and run.

Mitchell then drove north off of I-70 at the Wilson exit and wrecked the 2007 Nissan Titan he had taken from the Higgins home.

Mitchell then stole another pickup near Wilson Lake and was later stopped by law enforcement in Osborne County.

Osborne County authorities turned Mitchell over to Lincoln County law enforcement and that is where he is currently being held in jail. Saline County has placed a hold on Mitchell for the theft and damages.

Damage to the pickup stolen in Saline County and the home is placed at $17,725.
