Letter to The Post: Where Are We Headed?

Submitted by Bart Allen

Where are we headed?

That’s the question on the lips of most voters this year. Unemployment, medical costs, educational costs, energy – everything seems to be slowly spinning out of control. Those we’ve elected to represent us have sold our country out to their corporate handlers. From my perspective, if we, the citizens of this country, are not all on our own already, we soon will be.

What are we going to do? Blaming politicians is good sport, but at the end of the day, when those same politicians are gone, and comfortably retired at our expense I might add, we’ll be the ones that pay the piper – not them. At the Allen house, we’ve known this for quite some time through our intimate experience with the incompetent officials of Saline County. For those not aware, I’m running for Saline County Sheriff for this very reason.

There are many theories on why I’m running. I’ve heard them all. They range from opining, I need to see a therapist to a personal vendetta. Most of the reasoning is quite colorful and much more entertaining the truth of the matter. I’m running for one simple reason. Somebody needs to do something about them, their documented corruption, and good ole’ boy way of thinking. Since nobody else in Saline County has the intestinal fortitude for the task, then I guess I’ll have to.

That’s how democracy works. If you don’t like something, do something about it. In our case, I understand that some people believe law enforcement should help killers get away and treat victims like crap. I’m not one of those people, and I’m going to do something about it.

My point? I used to be one of the masses, sitting on my butt waiting for someone else to do the heavy lifting. “Somebody should do something”, I’d think. Well, this is the deal folks. There is no “somebody”. There is only us. If blaming everyone else gets you through the night, power to you [those darn congressmen!].

If not, it’s time to get off the couch and demand some accountability, like I am. I’ll never go away. As I’ve pointed out to the powers that be, they should get used to my face until they do the jobs they are paid to do. Sheriff Kochanowski is a case in point. Do you think he honestly believes serving as sheriff for 20 years is in the best interest of Saline County? It’s more in his best interest than ours. He hasn’t brought anything new to the table since last century. He simply loves the status quo, as most incumbent politicians do. How’s the status quo working for you?

The time’s coming. If we don’t reclaim this country from those that know what’s best for us pretty soon, there won’t be much left. Do something. People can criticize me and question my motives all day long. It doesn’t bother me in the slightest. At least I’m doing something.

How about you? Are you a whiner, or a doer?
