A new report says last month’s record high temperatures helped spur development of the Kansas wheat crop.

Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service reported Monday the crop is three weeks ahead of the same point both last year and the 5-year average.

The agency says about 61% of the wheat is now jointed, compared with 19% at this time last year and the 5-year average of 21%. The crop is even farther along in south-central Kansas where 87% is now jointed.

Wheat condition improved over the past week, with 11% rated as excellent, 49% as good and 32% as fair. About 8% is in poor to very poor condition.
