A 35-year-old Kansas City area man in a stolen car lead Dickinson County Sheriff’s Deputies on a chase that ended in Ottawa County Monday night.

According to a release from the Dickinson County Sheriffs Office, The Dickinson County Communications Center received a cell phone call about an erratic driver in a Mustang going west on I-70, about 10 miles east of Abilene just before 10 pm.

The witness was able to get a tag number, which was determined to be that on a stolen car from Overland Park.

Dickinson County Sheriffs Deputies tried to stop the 1988 Mustang near Solomon, but the driver left I-70 at the Solomon exit and went through the town of Solomon, then west on old highway 40 into Saline County.

The driver lost control of the car and put it into a ditch near Whitmore Road and Old Highway 40. The driver then backed the car out of the ditch and attempted to ram a Dickinson County Sheriff’s car before fleeing again and losing control of the vehicle again at Niles Road.

The driver backed up again and struck a Dickinson County Sheriff’s patrol car.

The chase finally ended when a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper used his car to pin the driver in the stolen car. After breaking out a window, Billie Joe Johnson was taken into custody.

Johnson was treated for cuts and scrapes and then booked into the Dickinson County Jail on charges that include aggravated assault on law enforcement, felony fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, driving while suspended, felony criminal damage to property, possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.

Johnson will also likely face charges for the stolen car in Johnson County. The Dickinson County Sheriff’s patrol car and the Kansas Highway Patrol car had minor damage.
