The American Red Cross is hosting a special community blood drive today through Wednesday in honor of Doug Frye.  In addition to whole blood, the Red Cross will also be collecting platelets at this drive.  It has been three years since Doug, now 23, was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor and was not expected to live.

Like many people across Kansas, Frye depended on blood products to live.  During a period of 10 weeks from May through August, 2010, he underwent eight surgeries to remove a rare type of brain tumor. He was fortunate to be in the skilled hands of doctors at the Mayo Clinic.

Following the surgeries, Doug had uncontrollable bleeding and required whole blood, platelets and plasma to keep him alive.
