“Never Too Old To Play” is the theme for this year’s national Older Americans Month, and the Salina Senior Center, 245 N. Ninth, will participate in the national celebration with a variety of activities throughout the month of May.
“The activities planned for the Salina Senior Center are a fun way for us to celebrate the seniors in our lives and to showcase an important component of the Saline County Commission on Aging,” said Leslie Eikleberry, Executive Director.
Since 1963, communities across the nation have joined in the annual commemoration of Older Americans Month – a proud tradition that shows our nation’s commitment to celebrating the contributions and achievements of older Americans. Current trends show that people over age 60 account for an ever-growing percentage of participants in community service positions, faith-based organizations, online social networking as well as arts and recreational groups. Lifelong participation in social, creative, and physical activities, all of which are offered at the Salina Senior Center, has proven health benefits, including retaining mobility, muscle mass, and cognitive abilities.

May 1 Registration begins for the Salina Senior Center’s Older Americans Month grand prize drawing. To register, please go to the Saline County Commission on Aging Executive Director’s office on the second floor of the Salina Senior Center.
May 2 Drawing for one month of free exercise. Registration began April 23 and will continue until the drawing at 10 a.m. today in the exercise class. The winner will be announced in the dining room during lunch today.
May 3 Salina Senior Center Art Show as a part of Salina Arts and Humanities First Thursday Art Rush, 5-7 p.m., Salina Senior Center dining room. Light refreshments will be served.
May 7-11 Salina Senior Center Scavenger Hunt. The winner will receive a five-meal card for the Salina Senior Center dining room. A new clue will be posted each day in the Senior News, on www.salinecoa.org, and on the Salina Senior Center Facebook page.
May 11 Mother’s Day Lunch, 11:15 a.m.-1 p.m., Salina Senior Center dining room. $3.50 per person. The menu will include: Chicken Cordon Bleu, Baked Potato, Carrots, Cheese Cake, Dinner Roll.
May 16 Monthly Birthday Party celebrating the birthdays of all those who were born in the month of May. Abilene pianist and singer Alice Thomas will entertain as a part of the festivities, beginning at 10:45 a.m. Birthday refreshments by Windsor Estates, Salina.
May 17 Innovative Senior Care is providing, free of charge, Care 3 Wellness Assessments from 9 a.m. to noon., in the third floor exercise room. These assessments will evaluate participants on memory, balance and fitness. Appointments are necessary; please call the Salina Senior Center at 827-9818. Testing will take approximately 15 minutes, and results will be discussed with each participant immediately following. All those participating will have the opportunity to enter a free-meal drawing at lunch the next day.
May 21 -25 Salina Senior Center Pool Tournament, details to be announced
May 21 Crystal Creek Band, a Salina country-western group, is scheduled to perform at 10:15 a.m. Refreshments will be furnished by Dignity Care Home, Salina.
May 30 Memorial Day Lunch, 11:15 a.m.-1 p.m., Salina Senior Center dining room. $3.50 per person. The menu will include: Roast Beef, Mashed Potatoes with Gravy, Green Beans, Peaches, Flag Cake, Dinner Roll, Chicken & Wild Rice Soup
