Manhattan man sentenced for rape, manslaughter

A 25-year-old Manhattan man has been sentenced to about 18 years in prison for raping a woman and beating a man to death.

Justin Taylor was sentenced Friday in Riley County District Court.

The Little Apple Post reports that Taylor pleaded no contest earlier to voluntary manslaughter in the death of 31-year-old Kevin Cockrum, who was beaten with a heavy flashlight in Manhattan’s Aggieville district last year.

While Taylor awaited trial in Cockrum’s death, authorities said DNA linked him to the June 2010 rape of a 57-year-old woman who was attacked while jogging in Manhattan. He also pleaded no contest to charges in that case.

Taylor will have to register as a violent offender for 15 years and as a sexual offender for 25 years after he’s released from prison.
