28 Saline County and other area athletes will be a part of the 3,456 competing May 25-26 at the Kansas State Track and Field Competition in Wichita at Cessna Stadium. It is the largest High School competition in the nation.
The Salina South Cougars will be headlined by Micheal Jones who blazed past the field at the 5A Regional in Salina. Jones won the 100 meter run and 200 meter. Also qualifying for the Cougars on the men’s side, Marcus Cutler in the Long Jump and 200 meter run, Cad Calvert in the 300 meter hurdles, and Tristan Irish in the 3200 meter run. The Cougars will also send their 4×100 meter relay and 4×800 meter. On the girls side Megan Holloway will run the 1600 meter run and the 800 meter run, while Emily Webb will throw the Javelin. The Cougar girls track team also qualified their 4×100 and 4×800 meter relays.
The Salina Central men’s track team will send William Reid who placed third in the 800 meter run as well as their 4×400 meter relay team. On the girls side the Mustangs send a handful of competitors including two pole vaulters; Arkansas State signee Taylor Swanson, who has the highest jump heading into State, and Bronwyn Ross. Calla Hill will jump at State in the Triple Jump, Ashley Weaverling will Long Jump, Malieque Tolbert will run in the 100 meter run and the 200 meter run, Hannah Hadnot will run the 400 meter run and Shaelyn Martin qualified in the 300 meter hurdles. Th Mustangs will send two relays; the 4×800 and 4×400.
The Southeast of Saline Trojans will be represented by five individuals and a relay. Brothers Nathan and Kendall Peterson will both be running at state. Nathan in the 400 meter run and younger brother Kendall in the 800 meter run. Brett Nurnberg the lone field event participate will do the Triple Jump and the Trojans also qualified their 4×100 meter relay team. For the girls, Brittany Ostmeyer will High Jump and Lindsey Poague will Long Jump.
The Sacred Heart Knights will be sending a very strong men’s team. Drew Diedrich will run in the 100 meter run, the 200 meter run, and the 400 meter run. Cory Donely will run in the 800 meter and both the 1600 meter run and 3200 meter run, in which he has the best time heading into State. Freshman Chris Sadquist comes in with the third fastest time in the 800 meter run. Araon Deidrich will also Triple Jump. The Knights also qualified all relays; the 4×100, 4×400, and 4×800.
Ell-Saline will send four men and a women’s relay to State. Aubrey Wilson will run the 800 meter run, Emma Dreese will do the 400 meter and Triple Jump, Forrest Dreyer will run the 3200, and Evan Morrical will throw the shot. The women’s 4×400 qualified as well.
The Minneapolis Lions will send a good variety to Wichita. Corey Egger has the fourth fastest time in the 800 and the 4×800 men’s team also qualified. Riley Baker will run the 200, Lucy Giles and 400 and High Jump, Anna Trahan the 1600 meter run and 3200 meter run, and all three relays qualified; 4×100, 4×400, 4×800.
