
Saline County Sheriff Glen Kochanowski said a 1995 Saturn driven by 36-year-old Joseph David Chavez was driving northbound on the interstate according to witnesses at a high rate of speed, when Chavez lost control, the car flipped several times before coming to rest.
The car crossed all 4 lanes of the highway north of the interchange entrance before stopping.
A backseat passenger, 36-year-old Eddie John Sawyer Groff was ejected from the car and pronounced dead at the scene.
Chavez and another passenger 21-year-old Angela Nash were both taken to Salina Regional Health Center for treatment of injuries.
Chavez who is under guard at the hospital faces requested charges of involuntary manslaughter, DUI, speeding, and driving while suspended.
The Kansas Highway Patrol accident reconstruction team is assisting in the crash investigation.
