UPDATE 3:37PM: Crews are now battling flare ups at the origin of the fire, near Schilling & Lightville Rd.

UPDATE: Multiple fire crews reported to a major grass fire near 4737 W. Schilling Road (near Lightville Road) Friday afternoon.

Law enforcement officials are reporting that the fire was a result of fireworks and at least two people were issued citations for illegal discharge of fireworks.

When crews responded to the scene at least two homes were in danger of being caught up in the blaze, but firefighters were able to halt their progress.

The fire spread rapidly from near Lightville Road and W. Schilling Road all the way north to nearly Magnolia road, burning up the pasture and a large number of trees in the process.

The fire was believed to be under control at around 2:45, however crews will likely be on the scene through the evening as there are still numerous hot spots and trees still smoldering.

One firefighter was transported to Salina Regional Hospital after overheating.

The landowner and emergency crews are also attempting to round up the cattle and horses that were in the area.
