NCAA League Football Preview: Week 8

high_school_footballWeek 8 of the high school football season brings the first week of opportunity for a lot of teams around the state. The opportunity to lock up a playoff spot, the opportunity to stay alive and the opportunity to be eliminated.

Southeast of Saline (5-2) vs. Lyons (5-2)

Last week, the SES Trojans took a loss to Sacred Heart by a score of 21-8. The Trojans are now on their heels for a meeting tonight with the Lyons Lions. Southeast must win this game tonight to keep their playoff hopes alive. It won’t be easy as the Lions come in with a 5-2 record as well. Lyons rallied in the fourth quarter, after being down big, to be Ellsworth last week, 40-33. Last year Lyons won this contest, 13-0.

Countdown to Kickoff starts at 6:30 tonight on 99KG and Salina Post

Ellsworth (3-4) @ Sacred Heart (6-1)

The Bearcats dropped their district opener last week to Lyons after leading big in the fourth quarter. Ellsworth has lost 3 consecutive games after winning three in a row. Sacred Heart comes in a hot team after their lone loss of the season. The Knights have won three in a row and look to lock up a playoff spot tonight.

Minneapolis (3-4) vs. Phillipsburg (6-1)

The Lions had a tough district opener last week, losing at Norton by a score of 41-7. Minneapolis has lost 4 of the last 5 games after starting the season 2-0. Things will not get easier tonight as the Lions host Phillipsburg. The Panthers hung with Beloit last week before fading at the end and taking their first season loss, 48-27.

Norton (5-2) @ Beloit (7-0)

Over the last 4 weeks, Beloit very well could have played the toughest schedule in Class 3A. The Trojans will try to stay on the undefeated path tonight when they host Norton. The Bluejays dismissed Minneapolis last week, 41-7. Norton started the season 0-2, but the Jays have won their last 5 games in dominant fashion. Beloit won this contest last season, 56-9.

Russell (1-6) vs Hoisington (2-4)

Since getting a win back in week 4, the Russell Broncos have gone 0-3 and have been outscored 165-0. Things will not get easier tonight with Hoisington paying a visit. The Cardinals are just a 2 win team BUT, all of their losses have come to ranked teams and 5A Great Bend. With just 2 wins, the Cards can still make the playoffs and that journey starts tonight.

Republic County (0-7) @ Plainville (3-4)

Republic County is left with 2 weeks to get their first win. Odds are it won’t happen tonight. The Buffs lost last week to Ell-Saline, 40-8. Plainville comes in to this game trying to rebound from a 40-8 loss to Smith Center last week.
