In the 2012 season, Southeast of Saline may have been considered overachievers. But, after finishing 4th at state in 2012 with just one senior, expectations were high for 2013. The Lady Trojans have lived up to those high expectations so far this season and maybe even exceeded them last weekend.
SES entered the Marion Sub-State with a 31-4 record and the #1 seed. However, the Lady Trojans were not the highest ranked team in Class 3A at the site. SES entered play last weekend ranked 4th, while Hesston came in ranked 2nd. Hesston had beaten Southeast once this season in tournament play and the Lady Trojans knew they would have to deal with the Swathers again before the day was done.
Hesston would jump on SES early in the Championship match but after a time-out, the Lady Trojans came battling back from 5 point deficit. Southeast would win the first game, 25-21. That momentum would carry onto an exciting second game that SES would take as well, 29-27.
Tomorrow the Lady Trojans will return to the 3A State Tournament, kind of. The tournament has been moved from Salina to Emporia due to the recent split of Class 4A. Southeast of Saline is the #2 Seed entering the tournament, but recent history tells us that really doesn’t matter with this group.
First game starts at 8:30 on Friday morning when Southeast of Saline starts pool play against Douglass. All of the Lady Trojans matches can be heard Friday on Salina Post.
