Cold Weather Alert: Ways to be Prepared

coldThe Salina Post contacted KDHE and spoke with Ashton Rucker, Public Information Officer, in regards to how to stay prepared for this cold weather both at home and while traveling.

Making sure your home is ready and safe for the winter months is crucial. Rucker, advised that every home should have a carbon-monoxide detector. “During the winter months the house is closed up and we are spending more time in doors.”

Also having a vehicle that is prepared for the cold months is crucial.

Rucker, advised it is important to check your vehicles battery, antifreeze levels, starter, heater, lights and exhaust system. Another thing that happens as the snow piles up is vehicles have a higher chance of getting stuck. Having a bag of sand or kitty-litter could save yourself from staying stuck.

Finally, Having a Winter Car Kit is crucial. Items that should be in it are blankets or sleeping bags, plastic bags for trash, garments like gloves and scarfs, bottled water, a flashlight, and something to eat.
