2:40 p.m. Update According to Riley County Police: At approximately 6:02 Tuesday morning, the Riley County Police Department received a 911 call regarding shots fired at 150 East Poyntz Ave. (The Quality Inn and Suites). Police officers from Riley and Pottawatomie counties responded, and once on scene observed a subject discharging a firearm outside of the hotel. As events unfolded, officers ordered the subject to cease firing and drop the weapon. When the subject failed to do so and continued firing, officers on the scene returned fire and struck the subject multiple times. Officers immediately rendered first aid and summoned medical assistance for the subject. There were no injuries to officers or innocent bystanders during this incident.
The subject was transported to Mercy Regional Hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds. Further details about the suspect’s medical condition have not been released at this time.
“Given the involvement of RCPD officers in the shooting, I have asked that the Kansas Bureau of Investigation handle the investigation. The KBI has agreed to do so and is now the lead agency in the case. The subject has been arrested for Aggravated Assault, additional criminal charges are possible pending completion of the investigation and referral to the Pottawatomie County Attorney’s Office.” Said Director Brad Schoen regarding this morning’s incident.
The names of the officers involved will not be released at this time pending further police investigation by the Kansas Bureau of Investigations.
The Riley County Police Department would like to thank the Pottawatomie County Sherriff’s Office, the Kansas State University Police Department, the Kansas Highway Patrol, the Wamego Police Department, and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation for their assistance in this matter.
