Tom Wilbur Presents Our Hero of the Week with His Award!

Screen Shot 2014-02-04 at 11.59.17 AMThis week, to show our appreciation to every man and woman who has served, or is currently serving our country, The Salina Post and BANK VI honors The United States Armed Forces in this weekly feature.

Although it is not possible to give every service member The Bank VI Hero of the Week award, it is possible to find someone who exemplifies what it is to be a serviceman in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Meet Master Sergeant Glenn Godsey.  Godsey has served his country for eighteen years and continues to serve today in the Air Force.  We asked Glenn what made him join the military.  He replied, “It’s a family thing.  All my brothers have been in some type of service; every male on my side of the family back to my great grandfather.”

While listening to him, I could feel the pride he has in his country, and his families’ legacy.  He spoke of the flight records he was able to go through showing missions his grandfather flew as a gunner during World War II and shared how exciting it was to be able to see those records.

Locally, MSgt. Godsey takes care of the Smoky Hill Bombing Range.  A few days ago, he and others had to put out a fire. “These things are common place,” he stated, explaining how the ammo from an A-10 can spark fires when they are doing practice strafing runs.  He added, “it’s amazing the things you get to do and get to see.”  He spoke with enthusiasm, but also with reserve.  I could discern the sense of discipline the Armed Forces has instilled in him.

It was my honor to interview MSgt. Godsey.  He, along with all of his brothers and sisters in service, are true heroes.  As civilians, we try to understand what it’s like to be in the military but will never fully grasp the commitment, sacrifice and discipline it takes to serve.  The best we can all do is support our Armed Forces.

From the Salina Post and BANK VI, thank you MSgt. Glen Godsey for your commitment to our Armed Forces.
