Salina Police Chief, Brad L. Nelson brought a proposal to the Salina City Commissioners at tonight’s meeting. He noted a large gap between patrol officers and the Lieutenants that supervise them.
Chief Nelson’s plan included decreasing the amount of lieutenants on the police force and increasing the number of sergeants. Chief Nelson stated, “Nation wide this is how it is done, I’ve seen it work and it does work.” He went on to say that instead of a lieutenants supervising 11 or 12 officers it would break down to a sergeant supervising 5 to 6 officers. Chief Nelson stated, “There would be more supervising officers on patrol.”
There was also discussion of increasing the interaction between Salina neighborhoods and the police officers that serve them.
