Fire Districts kept busy over weekend

A squirrel , along with a trash fire, and trying to roast marshmallows kept Saline County Fire Districts busy during the weekend.

On Friday afternoon about 5:30p.m. Fire District #6 was sent to 4533 South Burma Road where a grass fire damaged an unoccupied farm house, and destroyed two pickups and a wagon and car. The fire was apparently started by a squirrel that had been electrocuted on a power line and fell to the ground, catching the grass of fire. The property is owned by Eldon Tillberg. No damage estimate was available.

On Saturday morning about 10:30a.m. Fire District #7 was sent to 2752 West Pleasant Hill Road to a report of Morton building on Fire. Clair Steinle said fire from a trash barrel got away and set the grass on fire and caught the 30’x40′ building on fire. In addition to the loss of the building also destroyed were lawnmowers, a log splitter and a trailer. Loss estimated at $10,000.

Then on Sunday morning a little after 10:00a.m. two children trying to roast marshmallows in a hay loft caused about $1,000 in damage to a barn at 9520 E. Assaria Road. Rural Fire District #1 responded to the fire reported by Tasha Trout. The youngsters tried to set hay on fire and then could not put out the fire. No one was hurt.
