Reception Monday to honor RVSP and Foster Grandparent volunteers

volunteer connectionThe public is invited to a reception honoring local RSVP and Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) volunteers from 2 – 4 p.m. on Monday, March 24, 2014.

Hosted by The Volunteer Connection and the North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging Foster Grandparent Program, the reception will be held in the Visit Salina Annex behind the Salina Chamber of Commerce building, 120 W. Ash.

A new Volunteer Connection staff member and a new web-based application for use by both volunteers and agencies will be introduced. Information on both volunteer programs will be provided and refreshments will be served. Participants may adjourn to the City Commission meeting room at 3:45 p.m. for the reading of a Proclamation naming April 1, 2014 as Mayor’s Day of Recognition for National Service.

The second-annual Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service is a national initiative to highlight the value and impact of national service program participants to the nation’s cities. As components of the Corporation for National and Community Service (formerly the federal ACTION agency), RSVP and Foster Grandparent Program volunteers have served the Salina area for over 37 years – RSVP since November of 1976 and FGP since approximately 2000. RSVP is one of the largest volunteer networks in the nation for people 55 and over, mobilizing the skills and talents of individuals age 55 and over to serve a wide variety of needs within the community. Foster Grandparents are role models, mentors, and friends to children with special needs, providing a way for volunteers age 55 and over to stay active by serving children and youth in their communities.
