City Commissioners Discuss Gateways to Mark Downtown Salina

city comThe Salina City Commissioners were discussing details of potentially placing land marks to mark the entryways to downtown Salina.

The commissioners thought having a “gateway” to mark the perimeters of downtown Salina was a great idea. Thoughts like constructing pillars or an arch were presented. There was also talk of wanting community artists to help with the designs. Additionally, a potential limit to the cost of a gateway was $100,000, there would ultimately be four gateways . No official cost limit was decided yet.

The project would be called the Iron Avenue Reconstruction Project. Under the project thus far there is a $400,000 budget to place, “Aesthetically black powder coated LED street lights” east of the old Smoky Hill River channel to Oakdale Avenue.  It would also include replacing lighting along Iron Ave east of Oakdale Ave.

A $10,000 allotment for trees has also been proposed along with approximately $55,000 for decretive concrete on crosswalks along Iran Ave and intersecting streets.

The total projected cost comes to $2,747,000, this is not an official budget yet. The majority of the project costs come from pavement replacement and also replacing traffic signals.

This meeting finalized the scope of this project but did not decide the budget of the project.
