Congratulations to Leslie Ablard, MD, BANK VI Hero of the Week!
Dr. Ablard was chosen due to her work in the field of obstetrics and reproductive endocrinology. Obstetrics is the field that deals with helping a woman before, during and after pregnancy. Reproductive endocrinology deals with helping couples become pregnant who may be having issues doing so.
Dr. Ablard stated, “People have difficulty for years and years and then come see us at our clinic and become pregnant immediately.” Dr. Ablard said there are limits to what they can do here in Salina but that they try everything in their power to help here in town before people have to travel further. She went on to explain how Salina is a hub for all the smaller communities around us and how they come here before looking at other options in bigger cities. Dr. Ablard says, “You hate to put false hope in people, but we do everything we can in our resource power that we have in this community to get people pregnant that are struggling.”
Dr. Ablard also explained about the other side of pregnancy, the birth process. “98% of the time it is routine and 2% it is sheer terror.” One story that Dr. Ablard shared was about a girl that she delivered at 23 weeks. Normal gestation for a baby is 40 weeks. Dr. Ablard stated, “The baby was less than a pound, it’s pretty amazing that they can survive at that point.” Dr. Ablard still keeps in touch with the mom on Facebook. The girl is doing find and is healthy overall.
Dr. Ablard has a strong passion for her work, “I feel so blessed because I love what I do, very few doctors get to say they are spending the best day of somebodies life with them. To get to be a part of peoples births or help them get pregnant is the best day ever.”
