Meet Nancy Modin, this weeks BANK VI Hero of the Week.

The Big Brothers Big Sisters Organization recently honored Nancy as Kansas Big Sister of the Year.

Nancy is currently in the running to receive the National Big Sister of the Year Award.

Modin says prior to becoming a big sister, she always felt a tug at her heart when Big Brothers Big Sisters was mentioned.  So, she decided to become a big sister to Sierra.  Nancy says she chose this particular child because the two of them had something in common.  Both Nancy and Sierra have red hair.

When their journey began, Modin was introduced to a loving, compassionate, but shy young girl.  During the six years they have been paired, Modin has witnessed Sierra become a confident young woman.  Then, In 2011, when Modin was diagnosed with cancer, she gave Sierra the opportunity to be paired with a different big sister.  According to Modin, Sierra stuck with her and gave her strength to endure cancer treatment and still move forward.

“Nancy is that extra boost I needed all along.  She has helped me see the brighter side of things,” said Sierra.
